Big Shot Bob – Shoot Around Ep 144 – Candace Walked In Late
Episode notes
It's Friday, which means it's time for Shoot Around. The guys kick things off with NBA 2K27 dropping soon and try to guess the top 10 rated players in the game before it releases, and let's just say a couple of MVP-caliber names slip right past them. From there they run through which teams landed the most nationally televised games this season (four teams are tied at the top) and which teams barely made the schedule at all, before diving into the Jayden Daniels and LSU jersey number situation and what it says about how seriously players protect their old college numbers. There's a fun detour into jersey number stories from Rob's own career, the week's audio clip of the year courtesy of a very unfiltered local newscast, and a time capsule dig through a 1997 TNT clip covering the trade that sent Rob from Phoenix to LA. They close things out with a fan question about NBA Jam duos, which sends the whole crew down a rabbit hole of arcade nostalgia, from Mortal Kombat to Cruisin' USA. 00:00 Cold Open: It's Friday, 2K27 Is Almost Here 00:48 Guessing the NBA 2K27 Top 10 Rated Players 04:58 Guessing the Most (and Least) Nationally Televised Teams 07:39 Jayden Daniels vs. LSU Over His Retired Number 08:27 Jersey Number Pride: Steve Blake, Michael Irvin & More 13:09 Audio of the Week: Good Day Detroit's Beaver Segment 15:33 Time Capsule: The 1997 Towel Trade to the Lakers 18:07 Fan Question: Who Beats Rob and Dream in NBA Jam? 22:39 Favorite Arcade Games From Back in the Day
More from Big Shot Bob Pod with Robert Horry
All episodesHarp is across the street working the Braves-Dodgers NLDS game, so it's Big Shot Bob and Rob this week. Rob had a surprise sitting in the waiting room, though. Allie Clifton jumps on in the middle of her walk to talk WNBA playoffs: the Dream and Angel Reese, Becky Hammon's "play like ass and only lose by 10" speech, and who actually got her MVP vote. Then she reminds Bob he never won Defensive Player of the Year, and the Ohio State vs. Alabama trash talk starts. Bob breaks down what he liked from the Lakers' first preseason game. The ball moved, and the full-court pickup took him back to the old "wolf" trap call from his Lakers days, because basketball is like dancing and you have to mess up the other team's rhythm. Is Dalton Knecht the odd man out with all the wings L.A. brought in? Jalen Duren finally signs his five-year, $200 million deal, and Karl-Anthony Towns goes public about his extension. Bob took less money to stay with a winner three times in his career, including turning down Shaq's call to come to Miami, and he explains why his peace of mind was worth $5 million. Also this week: LeBron's helicopter commute, Hakeem Olajuwon's son committing to SMU and what any young guard should take from the Dream's footwork, Bob still salty about getting bumped from the Macau trip, Mike McCarthy's hot mic, an NFL ref telling Trey McBride exactly how he felt, and a Gainesville call-in that got referred to university police. College football picks: Texas A&M at Mizzou, Texas vs. Oklahoma, UCLA at Oregon, LSU at Kentucky, and Georgia at Alabama, with Bob in the building in Tuscaloosa. Big Shot of the Week goes to the plumber who helped pull a flydubai jet out of a nosedive. We close with a high-low game on what owners really paid for the Falcons, Rockets, Seahawks, Bucks, Washington and the Blazers, plus the $67 million Rockets story Bob still isn't over. Episode 278 gets recorded with a playoff game going on about 500 feet away. The Braves and Phillies are playing the NL Wild Card at Truist Park, so B-Dawg spends the first part of the show downstairs dealing with the chaos before he finally makes it in. It's been a day, and you can see it on his face. NBA media days gave us plenty to work with. JJ Redick had the line of the week about the Lakers' starting five, something very strange is happening behind Austin Reaves during his scrum, and Big Shot Bob explains why he never once did a radio station drop. Walker Kessler reportedly pushed his way out of Utah, Kawhi shut down questions before anybody could ask them, and Tyrese Haliburton and Kyrie Irving both say they're fully cleared. Kyrie is coming up on 600 days since his last game, and Robert wants to see him move before he makes any promises. LeBron says the Sixers have to get comfortable being uncomfortable, which gets us to the real question: who takes a back seat in Philly? Jenners is worried about VJ Edgecombe. Robert says it's Tyrese Maxey and compares it to what happened to Darius Garland in Cleveland. Then he explains why "who's the alpha" doesn't mean much on a team that wins, using the Shaq and Kobe Lakers as proof. (He did not say he was better than Kobe. Jenners tried.) Also this week, Jalen Duren's contract standoff and the weight clauses in Detroit's offer, which sends Robert into a story about Pat Riley's body fat tests in Miami and why he was happy to be in San Antonio. Giannis meets his first Florida iguanas. And Steph Curry says he played through blurry vision during the Warriors run. Robert isn't buying it, because teams check everything "from the rooter to the tooter." That's your episode title. On the football side, Michael Penix drops a live "pause" in his postgame, and Iowa's student radio crew barely survives their call of the win over Michigan in the Big House. Then it's college football picks. Jenners is 3-12 on the season, so he's going full George Costanza and picking the opposite of every instinct he has, including against his own Hurricanes at Clemson. Dan Lanning, Lincoln Riley and the big buyout club all come up along the way. Big Shot of the Week goes to Erin Howell. An 81-year-old man delivering lost airline luggage in Dallas-Fort Worth brought bags to her house, she helped him carry them in, and then she started a GoFundMe that raised $700,000 so he could stop working and pay for his wife's cancer treatment. That turns into a conversation about the healthcare system, and Robert breaks into an ad read for SureCo out of nowhere. Five and a half years into this show, that's how we found out he's the company's chief impact officer. We wrap with Preseason Prediction Fails, looking back at how far off Vegas and the NBA GMs were last year on the Spurs, Pistons, Pacers, Knicks, Mavs, Lakers and Thunder, along with this season's numbers. 00:00 Intro: Recording During a Braves Playoff Game 01:05 Anniversaries, Gifts & Grandkids 05:04 JJ Redick's Starting Lineup Comment 07:08 Media Day Photo Shoots & Radio Drops 11:20 Walker Kessler's Exit From Utah 13:45 B-Dawg Arrives & Braves vs. Phillies 16:35 LeBron's Sixers: Who Takes a Back Seat? 24:07 Who's the Alpha? Syracuse coach Fran Brown got in a ref's face and gave him the flinch, like he was about to swing. The ref didn't move. He just threw the flag. So on this week's Shoot Around, Robert Horry, Rob Jenners and Brandon "Harp" Harper go through the biggest loser moves they've seen from a coach, and Robert tells two stories we'd never heard: why he told his high school coach there was no way he was visiting Bobby Knight at Indiana, and the time Gene Keady cut him and Grant Hill from a team so he could keep a roster full of Big Ten players. Shaq is officially an honorary FBI agent now (his advice to the graduating class was to arrest Charles Barkley), so a listener wanted to know what we'd chase if we weren't doing this. Chef, lawyer and, from Harp, marine biologist, right up until a big enough roach walks by. That leads to safaris, deep sea fishing and why at least one of us will never be that far from land again. Then a listener sends in the Robins: Kyrie, Wade, Klay, Pippen and AD. Robert makes the case that Kobe was a Robin on the Shaq teams and Rob isn't having it. We also watch an influencer box a remote-controlled Terminator and lose badly, and go through Bleacher Report's all-overpaid team. Robert explains why Christian Braun was better off the bench, and the Embiid contract gets scarier the further out you look. Shoot Around drops every Friday. Catch the full Tuesday episode of the Big Shot Bob Podcast, with Jalen Duren's $200 million decision, East vs. West, our college football picks and Walmart or Waffle House, on the main channel. Detroit put five years and $200 million in front of Jalen Duren. He said no. With camps opening next week and his qualifying offer deadline sitting on October 1st, Robert Horry, Rob Jenners and Brandon "Harp" Harper try to figure out what he's waiting for. He isn't 23 yet. Both Thompson twins just signed. And if he plays out the qualifying offer and hits free agency, the math says he could end up with less. Robert explains how he'd handle it: take the money, then load the deal with playoff incentives. Before we get there, Robert talks about how he used to get ready for training camp (ramp down the weights, ramp up the conditioning), what happens when your son turns 21 and suddenly wants to go to Vegas, and why tequila in a plastic bottle is really just rubbing alcohol. Harp had exactly one tequila Jell-O shot at The Battery this weekend, and he wants everyone to know he said no to the second one. We also get into the Braves heading to the wild card and who we like in the MLB playoffs. Then it's the East vs. West argument. Is the gap still real? The guys go through the Pistons, Knicks, Sixers, Hawks, Wizards and a Lakers team nobody can quite read yet, which is where this week's title came from. Lisa Leslie gets her statue outside Crypto, Robert says the one that's missing is Dr. Buss, and a conversation about who Atlanta would honor next goes sideways the second Michael Vick comes up. Nicolas Batum retires, and we run a quick predictions round: Kawhi's games played in Toronto, Duren's decision, Ja Morant in Portland, the Lakers ownership mess and the East's top seed. College football: Rob and Robert are both 2-8 on the season, and Harp is sitting at 5-5 and letting everyone hear about it. This week's games are Texas at Tennessee, Oklahoma at Georgia, Ole Miss at Florida, Texas A&M at LSU and Oregon at USC, which is going to be a split household at Robert's place. Plus NC State's end-of-game disaster against Vanderbilt, a Big Shout of the Week for a Missouri teacher who ran barefoot over broken glass to pull his neighbor out of a house fire, and a full round of Walmart or Waffle House. 00:00 Intro 01:38 NBA camps are almost here + Robert's preseason routine 04:23 Kids growing up, Vegas at 21 & grown-up drinks 08:35 One tequila Jell-O shot at The Battery 10:45 Braves in the wild card & MLB playoff picks 14:36 Jalen Duren turns down $200 million 23:48 The Thompson twins both cash in 24:57 East vs. West: is the gap still real? 28:12 Wizards, Lakers & the highest credit score in the league 30:54 Lisa Leslie's statue & who's missing outside Crypto 35:12 Who gets an Atlanta statue? It's Friday, so Big Shot Bob and Rob Jenners are back with episode 147 of Shoot Around, the weekly grab bag show that catches everything the Tuesday show didn't get to. This week they start with the Barstool superfan who turned his Ohio State loss into a 14-hour McDonald's fundraiser for ALS, which turns into a conversation about the worst bets either of them has ever had to pay off — including the one wager that may have saved Rob and Candice's relationship. From there it's straight into fan questions: why Derek Fisher wore his headband over his ears, what Robert Horry was actually thinking on that infamous 0.4-second shot over Tim Duncan, and the single worst relationship red flag either of them has ever heard (it involves Aaron Rodgers). Rob and B-Dawg also get honest about their own red flags, and things go sideways fast once hangover stories enter the chat. The back half covers what team either guy would want to coach for a day after Akron let a fan call plays during a game, why managing a baseball team sounds like the most boring job in sports, and a genuinely bizarre painting from Robert Horry's playing days that's been hanging around ever since. Catch the full Big Shot Bob Podcast every Tuesday for the real basketball talk, and come back every Friday for more of this. 00:00 Cold Open & Friday Intro 00:43 Barstool's Ohio State Guy Pays Off His McDonald's Bet 02:10 Worst Bets Ever: Rob's Texas-USC Wager for Candice 03:47 Radio Bowling Bet Goes Horribly Wrong 06:22 Fan Q&A: D-Fish's Headband and the Shot Over Duncan 08:13 Fan Q&A: Aaron Rodgers' Red Flag Story 10:27 Rob's Own Red Flags & Needing Alone Time 11:44 Drunk Flirting: The Ultimate Red Flag 13:04 Worst Hangover Stories 16:54 Fan Q&A: Akron's Fan Coach and Who They'd Want to Coach 19:39 Why Managing Baseball Is Boring 21:22 The Alabama Locker Room Painting
Robert Horry and Rob Jenners are back in the man cave for episode 276, and Big Shot Bob kicks things off recapping his surprising showing at two celebrity golf tournaments before getting into the news of the week. The Kawhi Leonard trade to the Raptors is officially done, and somehow the Clippers ended up under federal investigation on top of it — Bob and Rob break down Steve Ballmer's carefully worded statement and why Danilo Galinari isn't letting Kawhi off the hook for how his career got rerouted. From there it's a full NBA news rundown: a big free agent's “winning culture” comments about signing with Minnesota get roasted, Jalen Duren is still holding out on a new deal in Detroit, and the guys break down what the Pistons actually have at center behind him. The NBA's Board of Governors met this week too, and expansion to Vegas and Seattle is officially on the table — Bob and B-Dawg go back and forth on whether the league needs two more teams or should just relocate one instead. There's also a Team USA women's basketball update after their FIBA World Cup gold, a Caitlin Clark clip that has Bob fired up, a Nikola Jokic rant about being tired of his own fame, and the crew's usual struggle trying to remember old CBA rules off the top of their heads. On the football side, the guys get into Myles Garrett's early-season injury and what it means for a Rams team that came one game short of the Super Bowl last year, plus a full slate of Week 3 college football picks headlined by LSU-Ole Miss. Then it's Big Shot of the Week, honoring the man who ran up a mountain to save a stranger's life, and a stacked round of Black Crime or White Crime to close out the show. 00:00 Cold Open & Episode Intro 00:49 Storage Room Purge & Rob's Golf Debut 04:46 Kawhi Leonard Trade to Raptors Finalized 05:29 Clippers Under Federal Investigation 06:27 Ballmer's Statement & the Fallout 09:49 Danilo Galinari Blasts Kawhi Leonard 13:23 Free Agent's “Winning Culture” Comments Spark Debate 17:45 Jalen Duren's Contract Standoff With the Pistons 22:35 Pistons Roster Breakdown at Center 24:09 NBA Board of Governors: Expansion Talk (Vegas & Seattle) 30:40 Old-School NBA Trivia: Michael Finley's Double Paycheck 32:07 Women's Hoops Roundup: FIBA Gold, Caitlin Clark, WNBA Playoffs 34:27 Kobe's “Amnesty Clause” Rabbit Hole 37:41 Nikola Jokic Says He's Done With Fans 42:17 NFL Monday: Myles Garrett's Injury and the Rams 45:01 49ers Roll the Rams: Shanahan vs. McVay 46:25 College Football Picks: Week 3 Slate 58:18 Big Shot of the Week: The Mountain Rescue Hero 59:26 Black Crime or White Crime Returns
